Side effects of GLP-1 may vary, but a lesser-known result of popular weight loss medicines is hair loss or thinning.
Some hairdressers have confirmed a point of view on customers who complain that they lose their hair during weight loss journeys.
Includes Ashley Dimatteo, owner of Ashley Lauren Beauty Lounge in Westchester, New York, and Briana Delvecchio, a color and hairdressing specialist in the di -show. The two spoke with Fox News Digital in an interview with the camera.
“There has definitely increased customers with hair loss,” said Dimatteo, emphasizing that he is gradual to fast and thinning to lose his hair completely.
Delvecchio agreed that he has had “a few” customers to report the thinner and dry hair, which he suspects that he could be due to weight loss drugs.
The hairdresser, which herself takes on a GLP-1 drug, said that there may be some reasons for hair changes, including new medicines, vitamin deficiencies, and weight loss, which can put stress on the body.
Becky Watt, an Ohio hairdresser with more than 20 years of experience, said he also noticed that customers lost their hair while taking weight loss drugs.
“I have seen and pour, and many hair are very easily when they are washed,” Fox News Digital told Fox. “I have not noticed a bald place.”
He had some customers, however, who are taking the medicines without any hair loss, added Watt.
Medical factors
In a separate interview, Dr. Philip Rabito, a New York City Endocrinologist, said that this reaction, called Effluvi Telogen, is a response to stress in weight loss that affects the hair follicle.
The answer is only temporary, he said. The hair will fall, and will grow again once the weight loss stabilizes after a few months.
“It is a response to severe physical stress and weight loss is considered inanition,” Rabito said. “It is the speed of weight loss that correlates with the amount of hair loss.”
Prior to weight loss drugs, traditional bariatric surgery would loss of 70% of excess body weight in about six months, said Rabito, who was often followed by six to nine months.
“Your body does not understand that this is a healthy weight loss: your body believes it is starving,” he reiterated. “It happens to almost everyone, some more than others.”
Those who lose weight more repetitively have a higher risk of hair loss, said Rabito, as well as those with a subjacent thyroid problem or micronutrient deficiency, usually in iron, B12 or vitamin D.
According to the doctor, these vitamin deficiencies can worsen as a weight loss occurs, so it is important to work with a medical professional to balance these levels.
“From what I have learned from talking to these specific customers, it seems that customers who still eat do not have hair loss,” Watt observed.
“It seems that my customers who say they are not hungry are the ones who lose their hair the most,” he continued. “I think this is possibly due to the lack of nutrients and proteins, although I am not a doctor.”
Tips for managing hair loss
Dimatteo and Delvecchio agreed that “always” would advise their customers to see their doctor to check the level of vitamins.
“And we will also put the hair routine,” said Dimatteo. “Basically, less is more during hair loss.”
The lounge owner suggested maintaining the scalp treatment, reducing the use of heat, brushing downwards and avoiding going to bed with wet hair.
“Check with your weight loss doctor or your endocrinologist before coming to us to rule out iron, vitamin D or anything that lacks you; we must govern it before we can help you,” said Delvecchio.
“Then we will tell you that we have to work on your scalp health; we will give you shampoo and conditioner that can be a little softer for hair.”
“The stimulation of the scalp is huge,” added Dimatteo.
“Rinse with cold water also helps. Try not to do harder treatments in the direction of lighting or coloration, distribute -as much as possible.”
Rabito said that losing hair is “part of the game.” He said he always warns his patients before beginning his journey to lose the weight that this will be most likely and is a “success brand”.
“Hair will be lost,” he said. “He’s going to get worse before improving.”
“But as long as vitamins are controlled, you get them properly; when the patient’s plateaus and weight are stable for a month or two, the body no longer being inanition and the body is less stressed, the hair grows better than ever.”
Watt said he often recommends a hair vitamin to his customers who are struggling with weight loss. “The diet also has a lot to do,” he said.
He also recommended using a shampoo and conditioner that are formulated to resist thinning and hair loss, along with a product construction product.
Dimatteo and Delvecchio assured those who experience a hair loss that regrowth takes time and that there are excessive hair growth treatments.
Delvecchio added: “Hair loss is temporary. It’s a positive stress and it’s worth it.”
When he previously contacted Fox News Digital, Novo Nordisk, the Ozempic and Wegovy manufacturer, he confirmed that hair loss is an identified risk by semaglutid, and is shown as a side effect on product information.
“In Wegovy’s clinical trials, he was informed of the hair loss in 2.5% of adult patients treated with Wegovy compared to 1.0% of adult patients treated with placebo,” said company spokesman at that time.
“Hair loss was more frequently reported in higher weight loss patients (≥20%), suggesting that hair loss events were potentially related to the magnitude of weight loss.”
“The patient’s safety is of the highest importance for Novo Nordisk,” the statement continued. “We constantly monitor the security profile of our products and collaborate closely with the authorities to ensure patient safety, including appropriate hair loss information.”
